Tag Vier (Day Four)

Today my German language class started. From 9-1 every day I go and learn German with about 12 other students. There are four levels of language classes into which people were placed based on their performance in the proficiency test that was taken last Friday. I was placed into the second level. The first level is for those who have never spoken German before. While that may make the second level sound bad, it is in fact comparable to the awkward teenage years – some of the members are barely more than beginners, whilst others are on the verge of moving on to the next level, and some are in between. I would see myself at a level of almost being able to move onward to a more difficult class, but for now this is satisfying. I think that we will have the chance to “test up” in a couple weeks.

It is nice to finally have a routine of going to class and doing something every day. Routines make the world go around. Class is enjoyable, albeit a bit elementary. The History & Culture class, which will start in the afternoons in a couple weeks, will add more routine to life.

The one thing I have found myself doing already, which I view as a good thing, is switching between German and English, even just for simple sentences. I think it at least means I am regaining some skill in German, while accepting the immersion.
